World Falafel Day Special:
A special mention to one of the dishes i had when i moved to Malborne
World Falafel Day is celebrated on June 12th each year. It is a day dedicated to appreciating and enjoying falafel, a popular Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas or fava beans, herbs, and spices. It is formed into balls or patties and deep-fried. This day was created in 2012 by Ben Lang, who aimed to celebrate the dish and bring people together through food. It promotes cultural exchange and appreciation, as falafel is a dish that transcends national and cultural boundaries. Falafel's versatility and adaptability have made it a favourite street food and a popular vegetarian option worldwide. It's enjoyed in many forms: in pita bread, as part of a salad, or as an appetizer with various dipping sauces.
This is my take on a simple falafel recipe. Please try and let me know.
Falafel Cutlet
Ingredients:
1/2 cup canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed
One small garlic clove, minced
1/4 small onion, finely chopped
Two tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
1/8 teaspoon baking powder
One tablespoon of all-purpose flour
Salt and pepper to taste
1-2 tablespoons olive oil for frying
Instructions:
Prepare the Chickpeas: In a bowl, mash the chickpeas with a fork until they form a chunky paste. You can also pulse them in a food processor for a few seconds, but be careful not to over-process them.
Mix Ingredients: Add the minced garlic, chopped onion, parsley, cumin, coriander, baking powder, and flour to the mashed chickpeas—season with salt and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
Form the Cutlet: Shape the mixture into a small patty or cutlet. If the mixture is too crumbly, add a little bit of water or more flour to help bind it together.
Fry the Cutlet: Heat the olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the falafel cutlet. Fry on each side for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Serve: Remove the cutlet from the skillet and place it on a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Serve the falafel cutlet warm, with your choice of sauce (like tahini or chilli relish) and a side salad or pita bread with fresh veggies.
